  • Whatever other PC error you might get, we surely got it covered in the Troubleshooting Hub.
Network resource unavailable

Computer errors will appear sooner or later on every PC, and while some errors are relatively harmless, others can prevent you from installing new applications.

In today’s article, we’re dealing with the Network resource unavailable error message that occurs on Windows 10 or iTunes.

This error prevents you from installing or updating certain applications, so it’s important to fix this problem on your device.

How do I fix the network resource unavailable error?

1. Update network drivers

Outdated network drivers are a certain source of connection errors. Driver updates are released periodically to fix bugs, help communication issues, and add new features and increased stability to your computer.

You could download the latest drivers yourself. However, the safest method to keep your OS running smoothly is to use a dedicated tool that checks periodically for driver updates and suggests the necessary actions.

DriverFix is such a tool that you can download for free using the button below.

Scan your system using DriverFix and use the Update Your Drivers Now option to allow the program to make the mandatory updates.

The whole process takes only a few minutes. Your network connection should be restored afterward.

No more network errors! Keep your network settings and drivers up-to-date with DriverFix.

2. Remove any leftover registry entries

Remove any leftover registry entries

Most applications add new values to your registry once you install them. However, once you remove those applications their registry values can still remain on your PC causing errors such as Network resource unavailable.

To fix this problem you need to find and remove those entries from the registry. You can do that manually, but modifying the registry is a complicated and a potentially dangerous process that can affect your system’s stability.

As a result, we recommend a third-party dedicated tool that is safe to use – IObit Uninstaller.

With IObit Uninstaller, you make sure that all the elements related to unwanted apps or programs are removed, preventing them to interfere with further re-installs or with other processes.

  1. Download the tool using the option below.
  2. Launch IObit and search for the unwanted program or app in the available list.
  3. Press the Uninstall button and wait for the process to finish.

Don't let the traces of uninstalled programs interfere with other processes. Uninstall them with IObit Uninstaller.

3. Create the required folders

Create the required folders

This workaround can help you fix Network resource unavailable error as long as you have the necessary files. Namely, the error usually gives you the location of the directory, and you just need to bring together the necessary files.

For example, if the installation can’t find myapp.msi file, you need to find it manually and move it to its designated location.

In this case, the error message says that it can’t find the following:

C:Usersmy user nameAppDataRoamingmyappPrerequisitesmyapp.msi

So you simply need to find the file on your own and copy it to the aforementioned location. If needed, you might have to create the necessary folders to complete the process.

This isn’t the most professional solution, but few users reported that they fixed the problem by moving the required files, so you might want to try doing that.

4. Check the Windows Installer service

  1. Press Windows key + R and enter services.msc. Press Enter or click OK.
  2. Locate Windows Installer and double click it.
  3. When the Properties window opens, set Startup Type to Manual or Automatic. Make sure that the service is running. If not, click the Start button to start it. Lastly, click Apply and OK to save changes.

After starting the Windows Installer service and making the required changes, check if the problem is resolved.

5. Download Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter

Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter

Many users reported that Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter fixed the Network resource unavailable error for them.

This tool will fix corrupted registry files or registry keys that control the update data. In addition, it can fix many problems that prevent new applications from being installed.

It’s worth mentioning that the troubleshooter can fix the problems that prevent updating or removing installed applications, so be sure to download it.

6.Edit the registry

  1. Optional: Click File > Export to begin creating a backup of your registry. Now select All in Export range section. Select the directory where you want to export your registry, enter the desired file name, and click on Save. If any issues occur after making changes to the registry, you can use this file to restore it to its previous state.
  2. Press Windows Key + R and enter regedit. Click OK or press Enter.
  3. In the left pane navigate to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesInstallerProducts
  4. Now navigate through each subkey and look for ProductName value in the right pane. ProductName value will tell you the name of the application associated with that key. If you find the key related to the problematic application, right-click it and choose Delete.
  5. After doing that, close the Registry Editor and restart your PC.

After your PC restarts, check if the error is resolved. We have to mention that few users reported that you can fix the problem by deleting the subkey related to Microsoft Security Client.

This solution might be a bit advanced, and if you don’t feel comfortable modifying the registry, perhaps you should skip it entirely.

7. Modify the installed applications

  1. Open Programs and Features.
  2. Select the application you think it’s problematic.
  3. Now choose Change or Repair option from the menu on the top.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the process.

Nevertheless, this isn’t a universal solution since many applications don’t support this feature.

On the other hand, many applications misbehave once they are automatically updated. By changing them or even uninstalling them altogether using the tool suggested in the 2nd solution, you make sure that they can’t interfere with the network settings.

The only problem is to find which app is causing the trouble, and this can take a while.

8. Use the original setup file to remove the application

Use the original setup file to remove the application

Several users reported that you can fix this issue simply by running the original setup file. If you still have it, some applications allow you to uninstall or repair them like this.

Simply find the setup file that you used to install the application and run it again.

Look for the option to remove or to repair the apps, select it, and follow the instructions on the screen.

9  Use Command Prompt in a virtual environment

use command prompt in vmware

This solution applies only to VMware software. If you don’t use this application, you should skip this solution.

  1. Start your virtual machine.
  2. Click on Virtual Machine from the menu on the top and choose Install / Reinstall VMware Tools.
  3. Once the drive is mounted, you need to open Command Prompt in the virtual machine.
  4. In Command Prompt, navigate to your DVD drive. To do that, you’ll need to use the cd command.
  5. Now enter setup /c or setup64 /c depending on your operating system. (By running one of these commands you’ll force the removal of VMware Tools.)
  6. Use File Explorer in the virtual machine and navigate to your virtual DVD drive.
  7. Install VMware Tools again.

Once again, this solution only works on VMware virtual machine, so it will not work on a host system.

Fix the network resource unavailable issue on iTunes

1. Delete iTunes entries from the registry

  1. Back up your registry before proceeding (as suggested above, in the 6th solution).
  2. Open Registry Editor.
  3. Press Ctrl + F. Enter itunes6464.msi or the name of the missing file. Only check Data checkbox and click on Find Next.
  4. Now you should find that file in one of the subkeys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesInstallerProductskey.
  5. Locate the parent key and delete it.

The key that you need to delete will have an array of letters and numbers in its name. In addition, you can check the ProductName value in the right pane to be sure if the key you’re about to delete is related to iTunes.

After you delete the problematic key, you need to restart your PC. After doing that, you should be able to reinstall iTunes without any issues.

After removing both iTunes and QuickTime, you should be able to install iTunes again without any errors.
