Dark Comedy, Dancing Skeletons, and Puzzles – TouchArcade

Light and dark, sun and shadow… the classic metaphors for life and death. Except, in Felix the Reaper ($3.99), they are not just metaphors, they are also the basic premise of the game. Players will guide Felix, a new field Reaper in the Ministry of Death, as he orchestrates ever more elaborate deaths, intent on impressing his lady-love in the Ministry of Life, Betty. The catch? The two may never meet—Felix must remain in the shadows, while Betty dances in sunlit meadows.

Felix the Reaper is a 3D puzzler in the style of Sokoban. Promising shadowy puzzles, comedy blacker than a city sky at midnight, and a dancing reaper, there are a lot of places it could fall short. Unfortunately, fall short it does… where art, music, and animation are high points, the gameplay itself leaves much to be desired.

Each chapter starts a little before a character’s timely death, and each level therein we guide Felix through shadows, moving barrels here, mirrors there, setting the stage just so for the star of the show to fall. Of course, it wouldn’t be a game, let alone a puzzle game, if all the shadows just aligned perfectly from the get-go. It’s a little more work than that, and frequently requires moving boxes, barrels, bundles of wheat, mirrors, and other miscellaneous items and beings to create a shadowy path to your destination. In addition to rearranging the environment, players also have a measure of control over the sun’s position, almost in a sort of time travel—although that can’t be entirely accurate, because time is explicitly frozen while Felix is around. Whatever the cause, the idea is interesting, and rather fun to play with.

Although playing with shadows is an immediately interesting mechanic, all the steps and juggling positions and going back and forth and back… and forth again can get rather tedious, especially if you’re never entirely sure what to do (although this is somewhat alleviated by the “next step" button in the menu). It’s not a big deal in the early chapters, but by chapter four… you’re really starting to feel the tedium sometimes, and that’s without going back to get three skulls, or playing the hardcore level variants.

Well, it’s a little much for me anyway, but for folks who find the basic puzzles a just right, or even a little easy, and who want a bit of a challenge? Well, you’re who the hardcore levels are for. These levels are slightly altered, have the additional objective of collecting coins, and new limitations—namely, players cannot rewind to the last milestone, or restart the level… and if you want to go back and do them later, you’ll have to replay the base level. And if that wasn’t enough of an extra challenge, there are also “super-achiever", time trials accessible from the level menu for those who meet certain skull requirements. Altogether, there are more than enough levels, at a variety of difficulty levels (although none especially easy), for a great many people.

Felix the Reaper is a fun game, but that’s not really due to the gameplay. No, the gameplay itself is often just there, while the enjoyment is primarily due to our dancing protagonist and his tunes. Watching Felix slide from one point to another, dance in place, or bounce his way into the televator is fun, and one wonders what he is listening to. Fortunately, we know. Probably. It isn’t exactly a stretch to assume that the soundtrack we’re listening to is the very same music our lovable reaper is dancing to. If so, it’s not half bad. As background music, each of the thirteen tracks ever so subtly alters the mood from whimsical, to pensive, to melancholy, to upbeat and happy, and more besides, while always keeping to a certain lightheartedness. It’s almost a perfect fit. Almost.

Why “almost", you ask? Well, it’s a small, petty thing… but some of—well, actually, a great many of—the dancing animations don’t quite line up with the music. This is almost certainly because they are idle animations, and so difficult to line up perfectly, but… I’ve spent a bit of time watching them (it’s hard not to, when you’re trying to figure out where to put a particular puzzle piece goes), and it becomes glaringly obvious pretty quickly that they aren’t synced up to the music. A small thing, to be sure, but when your main character is supposed to be dancing to the music you’re listening to, it’s annoying to see them not actually in sync.

Moving back to gameplay, remember how I said it was fun to play with the shadows? I stand by that. It is not fun, however, to constantly try to correct the camera angle. Nor is it fun to tap a square and not go there, or to try and drag an object to a square and either not have it register, or try to place the object on another nearby square. Each of these is annoying individually, but altogether, they’re really quite a pain. Add in the action and move limits, and the clock, and some of the later levels really start to not be very fun.

That’s not all, though. Part of Felix the Reaper’s appeal is the ridiculously over the top ways each character dies. Deaths like accidentally spearing your brother because you mistook him for a deer; or a dog chasing an extra crispy tenderloin down a well, dragging the blind madman down with him. Haha, Oops. Maybe it’s the gory, close up shots of each death, or maybe it’s that each character is more sad than comedic… but I really don’t see the humour. Which is a shame, because I came in expecting to really enjoy these, and… I’m not.

Right from the start Felix the Reaper makes three promises: There will be dark comedy, there will be shadow puzzles, and there will be dancing skeletons. It delivers on all three. The humour is black, the puzzles are interesting, and Felix’s dance moves are excellent, if somewhat mistimed. This is clearly a labour of love, and that love shows through clearly. Unfortunately, it was not evenly distributed, and the rough patches make themselves known rather quickly. Nevertheless, I would encourage you, oh reader mine, to give it a shot. Watch some gameplay, read a few reviews—it could be just the game for you!

Microsoft is fixing major issues in Windows 10 May 2020 Update

Windows 10 2004 feature update

Earlier this year, Windows 10’s May 2020 Update arrived with plenty of important improvements and a few new features like Cloud Recovery. With May 2020 Update, Microsoft added support for better memory management in Windows Search and Display Driver Model (WDDM).

As many PCs still await Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004) or struggle with compatibility problems, the OS has finally received fixes for two major bugs which have been plaguing users in recent times.

Resolutions are included in Microsoft’s optional Windows 10 KB4568831 update, which is now available for those who use ‘Download and install’ option.

This optional patch is a huge release as it addresses multiple issues in Windows 10 May 2020 Update and Microsoft also confirmed that the rollout of the feature update will expand to include more hardware configurations in the second week of August.

Microsoft says it has resolved problems with Bluetooth Realtek drivers for connecting multiple devices such as mouse, keyboard or headset at the same time. In addition, another bug has been fixed to re-enable support for variable refresh rate on Intel iGPUs.

Unfortunately, the upgrade blocks are staying in place until mid-August. Microsoft is expected to bundle these improvements into the installation media (Media Creation Tool) on August 11 or later.

Today’s update is optional release and it’s not going to be forced, which means you can skip it. If you don’t want to install the optional update, you’ll have to wait for Patch Tuesday.

Windows 10 May 2020 Update

Microsoft also plans to resolve issues with older Nvidia GPU drivers in mid-August, so it’s likely that the fix will be included in the next Patch Tuesday rollout.

The list of other resolved issues includes fixes for DISM command tool, Thunderbolt docks, Local Security Authority Subsystem Service, IME, OneDrive desktop app, and Always Connected devices.

However, users should still expect to come across a few bugs with Windows 10 version 2004 as Microsoft is currently investigating issues with Conexant ISST/Synaptics audio drivers and network adapter.

The bad news is that the upgrade block is also staying in place for devices with apps or drivers using aksfridge.sys or aksdf.sys.

Devices running an older version of Windows 10

It’s worth noting that Microsoft is expanding the rollout of Windows 10 version 2004 to also include devices reaching end of support.

Windows 10 end of support

In other words, it’s likely that devices running Windows 10 version 1709, 1809 and even 1903 will be prioritized as these OS versions will receive their last security updates later this year.

Dual Runner ‘Digit & Dash’ from Insomniac Games (Yes, THAT Insomniac) is Brought Back to Life by GameClub – TouchArcade

Insomniac Games are largely known for their output on Sony’s PlayStation platforms over the past two-plus decades, including franchises like Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Resistance: Fall of Man. Heck, they are so intertwined with PlayStation gaming that Sony themselves gobbled the studio up last year, putting them under the Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios umbrella. However, in the seven or so years preceding all that, Insomniac did try to diversify itself by releasing games on multiple platforms including Xbox, PC, and yes even mobile. Back in 2015 one of their newest mobile releases was a clever “simultaneous runner" called Digit & Dash where you had two control two cute little robots independently while they were running up opposite sides of a vertical platform at the same time. We enjoyed it a lot in our review from back then, and here is the original launch trailer for Digit & Dash so you can see what it’s like in action.

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcilZqsXhx4[/embed]

Anyway, like far too many games have over the years, Digit & Dash eventually became outdated as Apple released new versions of its hardware and software. And so GameClub has swooped in and nursed it back to health, updating it for all today’s latest devices and adding it to their ever-growing library this week. As with any GameClub game, if you previously owned Digit & Dash then you’ll be able to download the updated version for free even if you’re not a GameClub subscriber. For everyone else, you can download and try out Digit & Dash in a limited fashion for free, and then subscribing to GameClub for $5 per month gives you unlimited access to their library of more than 100 lost iOS and Android classics. That’s right, they’re also on Android now!

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwhBMYml7tA[/embed]

The very best place to get started with all things GameClub is through their official app which you can download for both iOS and Android here, and from there you’ll be able to start a one month free trial to see everything the service has to offer, and of course you can cancel at any time. It’s certainly interesting to see Digit & Dash brought back to life after all these years, especially in light of Sony buying Insomniac last year. I mean, in some abstract way, this is a Sony game that is now being published on Apple’s App Store by GameClub. What a wacky world! It’s also just a super fun game in its own right so I’m ecstatic to see it getting a second chance at life, so be sure to check out Digit & Dash now that it’s available again.

Windows 10 Build 19041.423 is now available, download offline installers

On the last day of July 2020, Windows 10 version 2004 has received another round of patching. As usual, Microsoft has also published the direct download links for Windows 10 KB4568831 offline installers, which should allow you to quickly update the systems.

KB4568831 is an optional preview update for May 2020 Update and it bumps the system to Windows 10 Build 19041.423. Unlike the Patch Tuesday update, which was released on July 14, this optional update comes with a long list of bug fixes and improvements.

This fresh optional update is being rolled out to Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004) and you need to install it manually from Update & Security > Windows Update > Optional Updates.

In some installations, Windows 10 Build 19041.423 will appear when you click on a new link called ‘View optional updates’. In the optional updates page, you need to click on ‘Other updates’ to expand the section and select the update that you want to download, and click on ‘Download and install’ option.

Windows 10 KB4568831 (Build 19041.423) Full Changelog

With this optional update for Windows 10 version 2004, Microsoft is implementing fixes for a number of bugs, including issues affecting File Explorer.

The acknowledged File Explorer flaw crashes UWP (Universal Platform Apps) unexpectedly and this occurs when the app attempts to restart File Explorer using Restart Manager. In addition, Microsoft is restoring the option to remove previous search items from the File Explorer search bar.

In Windows 10 Build 19041.423, another problem has been resolved where File Explorer is unable to render a preview of .msg files when Outlook is installed.

Microsoft is also addressing problems with Microsoft Word and Excel. The company has fixed an issue with pasting images and text from Word into Internet Explorer and another bug where Excel might stop working when you use Windows’ built-in Magnifier tool.

For consumers, Microsoft is finally fixing an issue that might display 4K (HDR) content darker when you use non-HDR systems for HDR streaming. Another issue has been fixed where the Settings page will close unexpectedly and prevent users from configuring default apps.

Microsoft fixes printing mess and other bugs

Windows 10 has finally received additional fixes for major printer issues which were caused by Microsoft’s June 2020 batch of security patches. The printing bug, which was shipped accidentally with June 2020 patch, proved troublesome for printers including Ricoh models and also Brother.

In addition, Windows 10 optional patch resolves an issue that prevents internet connectivity on some cellular modems and family safety features ARM64 devices.

SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Fairy Tail’ Review, ‘Moon’ Coming West Next Month, Today’s New Releases, the Latest Sales, and More

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for July 31st, 2020. In today’s article, we’ve got a full review of Fairy Tail courtesy of Mikhail, summaries of all of the new releases that hit the eShop today, a little bit of news, and a bunch of new sales to check out. It’s a big fella today, of that there is no question. Let’s get into it!

News

The Amazing Anti-RPG ‘Moon’ Comes West on August 27th

I don’t normally do news on Fridays, but I’ll make an exception this time. Regular readers know I love the works of Onion Games and Yoshiro Kimura. They just have a ridiculous amount of heart, for lack of a more scientific term. The latest game from Onion actually reaches back into the past, when Mr. Kimura worked with a number of other people on a game at the now-defunct Love-de-Lic. Moon was a very unique PlayStation game that questioned a lot of the things we just accept in RPGs, and in doing so served as an inspiration for titles no less famous than Undertale. But the game never officially came out in English. That’s about to change as the game will make its extremely long-awaited debut next month on August 27th.

Reviews

Fairy Tail ($59.99)

Ever since Koei Tecmo acquired Gust a few years ago, it has been interesting to see how the studio’s output has both increased and changed. Gust went from releasing one game in about a year on one or two systems to multiple games in a year across consoles and PC under Koei Tecmo. While the Atelier games had some quality issues around the time Atelier Firis hit PlayStation systems and PC, Gust knocked it out of the park with Atelier Ryza. The studio’s first game after Atelier Ryza is a licensed game based on Hiro Mashima’s Fairy Tail.

While most anime games are low quality arena brawlers (with games like Kill la Kill IF being the exception and being good), I always appreciate when developers try interesting things with source material. Dragon Ball FighterZ is easily one of the best anime games out there alongside Sega’s Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise. Gust has taken its own strengths with the Atelier series and brought the world and characters of Fairy Tail together through it. Fairy Tail in a lot of ways feels like an Atelier game with additions and changes. This is a double edged sword because it results in a lot of fetch quests but is definitely a step above a generic arena fighter.

Fairy Tail assumes you are familiar with the source material as it starts out with a grand battle tutorial that showcases the “Tenrou Island" arc of Fairy Tail. The remainder of the game covers the “Grand Magic Games" and “Tartaros" arcs with a bit of original storytelling thrown in. There is an in-game encyclopedia for lore and characters but it isn’t really a replacement for knowing things if you care about the characters.

The characters all have their original anime voice actors which is always welcome for fans of the anime but it is disappointing that there is no English dub option available. It definitely looks like Gust games will never have an English dub again sadly.

I mentioned that Fairy Tail feels like an Atelier game but with a Fairy Tail flavor. This is because the combat draws from Fairy Tail but the gathering, crafting (basic stuff), and progression feels a lot like an Atelier game. You control Natsu Dragneel initially and aim to grow your guild after it has been brought to the bottom of the ranks after the “Tenrou Island" story. This involves you doing all sorts of basic quests like taking on enemies, helping people, and more. A lot of this gets repetitive in the few dozens of hours you will put into Fairy Tail so keep that in mind as you work towards leveling up parts of the guild and improving the rank.

You get to control more characters and the game revolves mostly around the characters in the Fairy Tail guild. These characters are all hilarious and perfectly reflect how things are in the anime including the fan-service which there is a lot of in the game through costumes and animations.

Combat is turn-based with various combat options mapped to the face buttons. Each skill has a grid based area of effect as well. This adds another layer of strategy to the combat which varies in its difficulty curve as the game progresses. The skills look great in motion. The larger scale battles later on definitely amplify the spectacle on display with loads of enemies to deal with.

You can also initiate a magic chain once your Fairy Gauge is filled. This fills up after you and your party members attack. In a magic chain, you press specific buttons to execute more actions to continue a chain before finishing things off with a final skill called the Finisher. The number of attacks you can chain depend on character ranks. Some of the skills that involve other characters though feel cheap with 2D portraits used instead of 3D character animations for the most part.

With Atelier Ryza, Gust finally delivered a new release that actually looked and ran great on Nintendo Switch. Fairy Tail sadly isn’t great on Nintendo Switch. I’ve been playing it on PS4 and Nintendo Switch across both docked and handheld modes. The performance is erratic in both modes on Nintendo Switch while it is mostly smooth on PS4. Visually, the game isn’t a looker anyway with low resolution textures all over certain areas, but it is nice to see how the game scales on Nintendo Switch without many issues for visuals. While recent Gust releases have been good on Switch, Fairy Tail is a few steps back technically.

Overall, Fairy Tail is a competent JRPG and one of the better licensed anime games in recent years. While it doesn’t hold a candle to Gust’s better games like Atelier Ryza, Atelier Sophie, and even Blue Reflection, it is well worth your time if you’re a fan of the anime or Gust games. The original soundtrack also feels like a good fit compared to the anime music that sadly is absent here. Hopefully patches can improve the performance on Nintendo Switch because it isn’t great in its current state. -Mikhail Madnani

SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

New Releases

Fairy Tail ($59.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Well, you’ve probably read Mikhail’s thoughts on this game since they’re, you know, right above this paragraph. But for those who may have skipped down here for whatever reason, this is a JRPG developed by Gust of Atelier Ryza fame based on the popular anime and manga series Fairy Tail. It’s a good game with some performance issues on the Switch that may bother some. If you’ll allow me to add my perspective, as someone who has very little familiarity with Fairy Tail but a great interest in JRPGs: the story is kind of hard to follow and it feels like it’s assuming the player will already be familiar with a lot of the details of the series. The mechanics are solid, though, and I think if you’re willing to forgive the technical problems and don’t mind looking up some plot stuff on the Internet to fill in gaps, it’s a solid enough RPG to hold you over for a bit.

Dodo Peak ($9.99)

The latest game to make its way from Apple Arcade to the Switch is Dodo Peak. It reminds me a little bit of the SEGA classic Flicky in that the goal is to gather up all your babies and take them to the exit. This one is played from an isometric viewpoint instead of a side-view, though. Compared to some games that make the transition from Apple Arcade, Dodo Peak is charging a very reasonable price, and the physical controls make a meaningful difference to the gameplay. Nothing to go running down the street shouting about, but if you enjoy pick-up-and-play arcade-style games, this is a solid choice at a fair price.

Paint Your Pet ($4.99)

It’s a coloring book. With animals. Not all of them would make good pets, mind you. I don’t think you should keep a lion as a pet. Simply not safe. But you could color one and pretend it’s your pet. You don’t even have to color it in normal lion colors. You can color it green and call it a Martian lion. The sky is the limit here, as long as you consider the sky to be just a bunch of pre-drawn art and a small set of colors to fill them in with. Perhaps amusing enough for young ones, but wouldn’t you rather just give them a normal coloring book? Probably not that far apart in price, and they can go wild in ways this title won’t allow.

Naught ($19.99)

Limbo, is that you? Longtime readers with sharp memories may remember Naught, which first debuted on iOS and Android several years ago and even had a re-release on iOS five years ago as Naught Reawakening. Well, this is more or less that game, except it costs five times as much and it won’t disappear from your purchase history anytime soon. It’s a platformer built around the idea of manipulating the environment around your character, and it is decent. It was definitely worth a few bucks back in the day for fans of platformers. In 2020, for twenty dollars, on a platform packed with outstanding platformers at the same price or lower? Ehhh.

Nicole ($18.99)

A lot of games that call themselves dating sims are really just simple choice-based narrative games with a few forks in the road, but Nicole seems like the real deal. Which is to say, you have to choose how to use your time in order to effectively improve your stats, gain favor with the boy of your choice, and make enough money to make it all happen. But if all of that sim stuff isn’t doing it for you, you can always switch to visual novel mode where you’re just reading. There are a bunch of familiar elements here, including four different boys who fit into the usual archetypes, a main plot that really ends up being more of a side plot, and multiple endings. It’s okay, but not much more than that. Still, it’s novel enough to have something like this on consoles in English that you may want to bite anyway.

The Executioner ($9.90)

Nine-ninety, hunh? Well, you’ll be a fun one to include in the sales lists in the future. This game has nothing to do with Mack Bolan and is instead a sort of sim/narrative adventure game that puts you in the shoes of an executioner. You torture and kill people for a living, and somehow try to keep sane while doing it. An interesting idea, but cumbersome writing takes it down a notch. The game is also fairly short, and while that’s not a sin all on its own, the lack of a satisfying close to the story certainly dampens the whole affair. I feel like this game is only a few steps away from being something special and there’s certainly treasure to be found here for the forgiving, but it’s a tough game to recommend wholeheartedly in its current state. It probably goes without saying, but the subject matter here is really dark, so if you don’t like that kind of thing? You were warned.

FootGoal! Tiki Taka ($4.99)

This game’s title sounds like what someone who wanted to mock soccer would call the sport. Enjoying the FOOTGOAL game, everyone? Anyway, you might think this is another soccer game, or perhaps you wouldn’t. The screenshot is right there, after all. So yeah, this is a foosball game. There’s local multiplayer support for two players, and a few different modes to dip into. Though when it says “different modes", it means Quick Play, a World Cup mode, and the aforementioned multiplayer. So… not that many, really. But for five dollars I could see this being amusing enough in the right context. And unlike a real foosball table, you don’t have to figure out where to store it when you get bored with it.

Tiny Racer ($9.99)

There are lots of racing games on the Switch, and this is certainly one of them. The appealing concept of racing small toy cars and other vehicles around full-scale environments is squandered thanks to lousy physics, poor collision detection, and irritating progression. There are 15 different tracks, 8 different vehicles, 3 difficulty levels, 3 game modes, and 2-player support via local multiplayer. But what you won’t find here is a game worth spending a tenspot on. At least in my opinion, anyway. You’re free to make your own choices; Chu-Chu died for your sins after all.

Lost Wing ($7.99)

This high-speed action game is apparently inspired by games like Zaxxon, but in practice its camera view and higher speed make for something quite different. Blast and zoom your way through three different worlds, avoiding obstacles, battling enemies, and taking down the bosses. There are multiple play modes, along with a variety of ships and weapons to enjoy. It’s a very straightforward game in most respects, but it’s also quite challenging. It knows what it wants to do and it does it with style. For the price, I think it’s a fair proposition.

Family Mysteries: Poisonous Promises ($14.99)

We’ve seen a fair number of hidden object adventure games on the Switch recently, but it’s been a little bit since the last one from Artifex Mundi. Well, here we go with Family Mysteries: Poisonous Promises, an adventure game that adopts a police drama-style setting. You’re a detective who has to help their partner, Duke, solve a particularly vexing murder case. Hint: it involves poison. Just when you think you’ve wrapped up the case, you realize it’s only just begun. Like most games from Artifex Mundi, Family Mysteries: Poisonous Promises mixes a somewhat engaging pulpy story with some mild puzzle-solving to create a concoction that many find pleasing.

Dininho Adventures ($1.99)

In contrast to its well-made, highly affordable puzzle and shooter games, QUByte’s platformers haven’t fared very well. Dininho Adventures is the latest, and I’ll at least say that it has a better sense of style to it than the last effort from this publisher. You’ll travel through four different worlds, delivering eggs to their nest. There’s apparently an additional world you can unlock if you explore well. A timer counts how long you to take, a helpful option for those who like to do speedruns. Your best times for each stage can be compared with those of your friends, though I’m not sure what means the game uses to do that. Well, it’s only a couple of dollars.

Time Tenshi ($14.99)

This one is a visual novel about a team of time traveling ladies that you’ll be accompanying on their adventures. The main character is a young man named Kenji who has lost everything in a house fire. Things seem fine at first, but the baddies get their hands on a time travel device and timeline shenanigans begin! Help save the present and future, and perhaps develop a romance along the way. This is a reimagining of the original Time Tenshi‘s story, with an expanded storyline, improved artwork, and more. The series has its fans on PC, and I imagine it will find a following on the Switch as well.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Well, it’s not the Friday deluge we sometimes see. But there are plenty of new sales to check out anyway, from titles like Slime-San that rarely go on sale to regular faces like Chasm. Perhaps more pressing is the weekend outbox, however. The Square Enix sale ends on Sunday, so it’s time to make some hard choices about how far you can stretch your wallet. The latest Activision sale is also coming to a close, but those will likely be back around before too long.

That’s all for today and this week, friends. We’re heading into the dog days of summer, and that means slightly fewer new games than we usually see. Next week is looking dry for big names, but who knows what indie titles may surprise us? As for me, I’ve got some eShop money to burn that I got for my birthday yesterday. Tough choices await! I hope you all have a great weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!

Microsoft reveals how apps will run on the Surface Duo

Microsoft’s Surface Duo is a phone fascinating and it might be the most interesting device of 2020. With this dual-screen device, we finally get to see what Microsoft can do with Android in a dual-screen form factor.

For example, Microsoft is working on ‘peek’ UI for Surface Duo that will let you view the notifications quickly without having to unlock the device in the first place.

For developers, Microsoft has added support for Google’s Android Jetpack WindowManager, which allows developers to use the Google-backed Jetpack library to create and update apps for Surface Duo.

In addition, Microsoft is also making it easier for developers to optimize their apps for the dual-screen experience. For instance, developers can use “helper class” to determine the state of the device, such as the hinge area, and Surface Duo can also detect when and whether the app is spanned across both screens to control within the app options.

Surface Duo allows apps to respond to events like spanning or unspanning to change the app layout accordingly.

Surface Duo bottom navigation

Unlike Galaxy Fold, Surface Duo has two separate displays and this could result in one of the navigation options within the app being obscured by the hinge.

Fortunately, Surface Duo’s built-in bottom navigation has configuration controls to choose when and where navigation options should display.

Surface Duo tabs navigation

Likewise, app tabs (pages) might be hidden by the hinge in dual-screen hardware like Surface Duo. To resolve the problem, Microsoft has created a layout called ‘dual-screen tab layout’ that allows developers to configure the tabs and group them on either screen so that all options are visible.

Another feature called ‘Fragment handler’ will allow the device to restore fragments that are needed after a screen transition. This enables a smooth transition of app UI when you switch from single-screen to dual-screen.

Microsoft is also making it easier for developers to migrate existing apps with ‘frame layout’ support.

Surface Duo app UI

As reported earlier, Surface Duo comes with Android 10, Snapdragon 855, 6GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage, gestures, and pen integration. Surface Duo is expected to begin shipping in the last week of August and the production of the device has already begun.

‘Hyena Squad’ is the New Tactical Strategy RPG from Wave Light Games, Available for Pre-Order Now – TouchArcade

Wave Light Games has been showering us with excellent tactical strategy games on mobile for years now, and after taking the plunge into publishing games on the Nintendo Switch, they’re back at the iOS wheel again with a new game called Hyena Squad. If you’re familiar with Wave Light’s previous games, you probably have at least some idea of what’s in store here. It’s a turn-based tactical strategy game! But aside from that comfortable general description, there’s actually several new things going on in Hyena Squad. One of the biggest is that it takes place on a regular squared grid rather than the hexagon-based grids of previous Wave Light games. It’s set in the same universe as Strike Team Hydra and features the same alien race as the antagonists, but the story instead focuses on a band of mercenaries who are on a mission to bust a mafia boss out of a deep space prison. You can see Hyena Squad in action in the following trailer.

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cszwCodbMkk[/embed]

Another change with Hyena Squad is in the overall scope, which is much smaller than your typical Wave Light game. It’ll feature 6 different team members and 12 missions overall, but those missions are also a lot more objective-focused and have more specific requirements besides just eliminating all enemies. The pricing is also reflected by the game’s smaller scope, and you can actually pre-order Hyena Squad on the App Store now for just $1.99. If it’s popular enough Wave Light already has ideas for additional episodes. Overall we love Wave Light’s stuff so are looking forward to checking out Hyena Squad when it launches on September 9th. In the meantime check out the game’s official website for some more details.

Microsoft Edge to make tabs discovery easier with tab preview feature

Microsoft Edge on Windows

While Microsoft Edge is still catching up to Google Chrome, the browser is now based on Chromium and it offers a few welcome new additions. But there’s one problem – the new Microsoft Edge is still missing a few key features that a lot of people liked in the classic Edge.

With Creators Update for Windows 10, Microsoft also added a new feature that allowed users to find tabs quickly in Microsoft Edge. The ‘tab preview’ allows users to hover over an individual tab that is not in focus to see it in a static thumbnail preview.

The tab preview feature is now being prepared for the Chromium-based Edge too. Edge Canary Build 86.0.593.0 finally adds support this feature, allowing users to preview all their open tabs in a single click instead of visiting individual tabs.

Microsoft Edge Tab Preview

Tab preview is something that we’ve already seen in Google Chrome, but Microsoft’s approach is slightly different in terms of the user interface.

In addition, Microsoft is planning to enable support for Google Chrome themes in Edge by default. The Chrome themes are custom skins that can give your Microsoft Edge a whole new look and it’s also possible that Microsoft will start making themes for its browser in the near future.

Collections

Collections, which is one of the exclusive features available in the desktop version of Microsoft Edge, is finally available on iOS and Android.

Collections support on mobile versions of Edge will make it super-easy to collect, manage and sync your project or shopping lists across your devices.

If you use the same Microsoft account on Windows, macOS and your mobile device, you can finally have your collections synced between the two form factors, so the same content will be available everywhere.

Collections support for Microsoft Edge on iOS and Android is currently rolling out to users.

Pre-Registration Now Live for Meteorfall: Krumit's Tale

If, like us, you love Meterofall: Journey, then you’ll no doubt be cock-a-hoop to find its sequel is up for pre-registration on the Google Play Store. The game, which is known as Meteorfall: Krumit’s Tale, has been out on Steam for a while. Over there it’s got a 9/10 rating.

One thing you can expect from Krumit’s Tale is a bigger experience. There are more cards, more choices and a lot more loot. Everybody loves loot, right?

There are five different heroes to choose from and the roguelite elements mean every run is going to be different. With more than 20 dungeons, more than 25 enemies, more than 50 perks and over 300 cards, it’s fair to say there’s a bunch of content stuffed into Krumit’s Tale.

Check out the trailer we’ve embedded below to get an idea of how the game differs from its predecessor.

Looks pretty darn awesome, right? We can’t wait to get our hands on the pocket-sized version of Krumit’s Tale, and we reckon you’re going to be in a similar boat. Meteorfall: Journey was brilliant, and this one looks like it’s turning everything that made that game so great up to 11.

Click here and you can pre-register for Meteorfall: Krumit’s Tale on the Google Play Store. We’re not sure when it’s going to come out, but we don’t imagine you’re going to have too long to wait.

Ubisoft's Splinter Cell to be made into Netflix anime show | Pocket Gamer.biz

French publishing giant Ubisoft is teaming up with Netflix for an anime series based on its popular Splinter Cell franchise.

That's according to Variety, which reports that the show is being helmed by John Wick co-creator Derek Kolstad, who is serving as writer and executive producer for the venture. Two 16-episode series of the Splinter Cell anime have been ordered.

This is the latest venture by Ubisoft to bring one of its games IP to film and TV. The French firm has a movie based on The Division coming to Netflix starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain, while Michael B Jordan of Black Panther and Creed fame is apparently set to appear in a series of Rainbow Six films. Meanwhile, there were rumours of Tom Hardy appearing in a Splinter Cell film adaptation.

Keeping busy

Writer Derek Kolstad has also been pretty busy, too. Earlier in the year, the John Wick co-creator said that he was working on pitches for a number of TV shows based on video games. In July, Kolstad was brought on board as writer and executive producer for a My Friend Pedro television series.

911 Operator is Super Cheap on the Google Play Store Right Now

911 Operator is, as you might be able to tell from the name, a game about taking 911 calls. You’re in charge of sending emergency responders where they’re needed. And you can pick the game up for cheaper than half price at the moment.

You’re not just sending out the police, either. You’ve got ambulances crews and firemen as well. You might have to give out first aid advice to keep people calm, but you might be talking to pranksters, or sometimes even terrorists.

Basically there’s a lot going on, as you’d expect. There’s a career mode spread across six different cities, but you can play in any city in the world according to the game’s blurb. Check out the trailer we’ve embedded below to get an idea of what to expect.

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyNJEkRImmo[/embed]

The game has been out for a while, and it’s received a number of awards over the years. You’ve got loads of different incidents to deal with, 50 pieces of recorded dialogue, and you even get to send out helicopters. Helicopters!

911 Operator usually costs $6.49, but right now you can grab it for just $1.49, which we think you’ll agree is an absolute – and perfectly legal – steal. Click here and you can pick up 911 Operator from the Google Play Store.

Have you played the game? Got your own opinions to share on it? Then make sure you let us know in the comments section at the bottom of this paragraph.

SuperData thinks that publishers are doing fine without E3 | Pocket Gamer.biz

Triple-A games companies are seeing more engagement with their announcement events than they did for previous E3s.

That's according to Carter Rogers, principal analyst at research firm SuperData, who wrote in a blog post that the online showcases that companies including Sony, Microsoft and Ubisoft ran boasted huge viewer figures. This follows E3 being cancelled due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

The June 11th PlayStation 5 reveal event boasted an average of 1.51 million viewers per minute on Twitch, compared to 940,000 for Microsoft's E3 2019 conference. Of course, this isn't a fair comparison given that the PS5 showcase is arguably a bigger deal that would draw a larger crowd than a regular press event. Oh, and Microsoft would have been pushing its E3 broadcast on its own Mixer platform rather than Twitch.

Ubisoft's Forward event on July 12th, meanwhile, drew an audience of 1.02 million average users per minute when it aired in July, compared to the 750,000 that the French firm's E3 2019 press conference attracted.

Doing just fine

"The results of switching to remote conferences in 2020 show that triple-A publishers are fine skipping E3 or other events if they so choose, at least when it comes to generating coverage," Rogers concluded.

"However, smaller publishers and developers benefit from proximity to bigger announcements. The organisers of virtual events like Guerrilla Collective and the Future Games Show should be commended for putting on showcases this summer, but these probably can’t replace the attention-grabbing value of a big conference. (That’s to say nothing of the non-marketing benefits of events including business development and networking opportunities)."

Playtika has given itself a rebrand | Pocket Gamer.biz

Mobile games developer Playtika has given itself a fresh look as it goes through a rebrand.

When creating its new logo, the Israeli company opted for a more simple looking cheetah and typography. Furthermore, the circle is now slanted to demonstrate the firm is moving forward.

Moreover, Playtika thought about its new story and company mission as it chose an improved look – to entertain the world through infinite ways to play. The Bingo Blitz developer removed its signature cheetah from all its social media and website, before reintroducing it as part of the new logo.

On a mission

"Playtika's new look and feel is designed to match our new brand story and our mission – to entertain the world through infinite ways to play. To communicate playfulness, the design system is vibrant, creative and fun. We believe this is a true manifestation of Playtika's DNA, culture and values," said Playtika monetisation and marketing vice president Laura Keren.

Earlier this year, Playtika played its part in fighting the coronavirus as it donated hot catered meals to those that were affected.

Tumblr is a popular social media website that allows its users to create blogs and share their content with others. More than 465 million people are currently using the platform. However, recently some people reported that Tumblr doesn’t load some images in their browser.

This situation can be frustrating in the long run. Today we will show you how you can resolve it once and for all.

How to fix Tumblr images not loading issues?

1. Change your browser

Many users confirmed that this problem was resolved when they tried a different browser. It is highly recommended that you switch browsers in that case.

Install Opera

Opera is a Chromium-based browser with similar features as Chrome. But that is pretty much as far as the resemblance goes as Opera is a unique browser solution whose distinctive look and features have managed to build its niche audience.

This browser comes with an added advantage as it focuses on security and user privacy. Furthermore, it offers tracking protection and a full-scale integrated VPN as well as a built-in adblocker.

You should consider Opera if you are looking for a reliable and secure browser that resolves Tumblr loading issues as well.

Let’s quickly look at its key features:

  • In-built VPN tool to unblocked restricted content and anonymize your online activities
  • Integrated snapshot tool to capture your desktop without leaving your browser
  • Adblocker solution to speed up loading times even more and avoid disruptions as well as third-party data tracking
  • Fully customizable UI with different modes, themes, workspaces and workflows, sidebar display and more
  • Seep dial separate tab
  • In-built instant messaging (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) to streamline communication
