Err_connection_aborted error [Chrome, Windows 10]

The err_connection_aborted error is one some might have come across when opening a website page in Google Chrome.

This is an error that comes up as a consequence of the site not supporting SSLv3 (Secure Socket Layer).

It might also be down to a program blocking access to the website, or it could just be the site’s temporarily down.

The Chrome err_connection_aborted error states:

This site can’t be reached

The webpage might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

Although the error can appear when accessing basically any site, here are some of the most reported – Facebook, YouTube, WordPress, Google.

How can I fix the Err_connection_aborted error?

1. Try using Opera instead of Chrome
2. Check if the site’s temporarily down
3. Disable SSLv3 in Google Chrome
4. Disable Antivirus Software and Firewall
5. Run sfc/scannow in the Command Prompt
6. Reset Google Chrome
7. Reinstall Google Chrome
8. Flush DNS
9. Run the Troubleshooter
10. Run DISM

1. Try using Opera instead of Chrome

2. Check if the site’s temporarily down

As stated, it might be the case that the website’s just down. A quick way to tell is to open this page. Type the URL of the page that isn’t opening into the text box and click or just me?

3. Disable Antivirus Software and Firewall

1. Enter Windows firewall in the Cortana search box and select Windows Firewall.
2. Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off to open the options shown below.Then select the Turn off Windows Firewall radio buttons.
3.  To disable anti-virus software, right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager. Then right-click any virus software on the Processes tab and select End task.

4. Disable SSLv3 in Google Chrome

1. Another thing you could do is disable SSLv3 in your Google Chrome browser. To do that, first, add a Chrome shortcut to the desktop.
2. Then right-click the Chrome desktop shortcut, select Properties, and click the Shortcut tab as below.
3. Then click inside the Target field text box, add a space after the ” and enter –ssl-version-min=tls1 as shown directly below.
   Press the Apply button and click OK to apply the new settings and close window.
4. Then reset your router after disabling SSLv3.

5. Run sfc/scannow in the Command Prompt

1. Thirdly, you could run sfc/scannow to fix err_connection_aborted. This scans and fixes corrupt system files in Windows, which could be behind the err_connection_aborted issue, so press the Win key + X and select Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu.
2. Now type sfc/scannow into the Command Prompt window and press Enter.
3. That will initiate a system scan which might take a while. Once done, it will have repaired corrupted system files that might have caused the error.

6. Reset Google Chrome

1. Press the Win key + R at the same time. The Run window will open.
2. Type the following path and press Enter: %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalGoogleChromeUser Data
3. Now, copy the Default folder somewhere else, and delete it from the User Data folder.

If none of the previous solutions managed to get the job done, the next thing we’re going to try is resetting the Chrome browser itself.

But before we proceed, keep in mind this will erase all your personal data, like saved passwords, cache, and cookies. So, make sure you have a backup ready.

First, we’re going to delete all the Chrome data from your computer. Then, it’s time to reset the browser itself:

1. Open Google Chrome and go to Settings (from the three-dot menu)
2. In the Settings window, scroll down and click Advanced.
3. Scroll down, and click the Reset column.
4. The new window will open, asking if you’re sure you want to reset Google Chrome. Click Reset to confirm.
5. Wait for the process to finish, and restart Chrome.
