Microsoft confirms storage issues in Windows 10 May 2020 Update

When Microsoft announced the May 2020 Update for Windows 10, it also published a list of known issues. Lenovo also confirmed additional known issues with Windows 10 May 2020 Update and Microsoft said users would be unable to download the update until those issues or driver compatibility problems were fixed.

Microsoft has added another bug to the growing list of known issues, which was first pointed out by us. As we reported recently, Windows 10 May 2020 Update breaks down Storage Spaces functionality and corrupts parity space for some users, and it also leads to issues with Defragment tool.

Spotted by us, Microsoft has now confirmed another known issue in Windows 10 version 2004. In a support document, Microsoft says that the company is aware of issues with Storage Spaces on some systems after upgrading to Windows 10 version 2004 and Windows Server 2004.

Microsoft says that partition for Storage Spaces might show as “RAW” in Disk Manage and the company also warned users against running chkdsk command on any device affected by this issue.

To prevent issues with data on Storage Spaces, Microsoft recommends users to try these steps:

• Open Start menu or Windows Search.


• Type ‘PowerShell’.


• Right-click to open PowerShell with administrator rights.

In PowerShell window, type the following command:

get-virtualdisk | ? WriteCacheSize -gt 0 | get-disk | set-disk -IsReadOnly $true

The above command will make your Storage Spaces ‘read only’ and you won’t be able to write to them.

“Your device will still be usable, and any volume not seen as RAW should be readable,” the company said.

At the moment, Microsoft is not aware of a proper workaround and you should not upgrade to Windows 10 version 2004 if you use Storage Spaces feature.
